Jazmine Williams Presents at the SCOE Early Learning 2025 Conference: Promoting Diversity Through Literacy
April 2025, I had the incredible honor of being a presenter at the SCOE (Sacramento County Office of Education) Early Learning 2025 Conference—and what an amazing experience it was!
As the founder of Hungry for a Snack Children’s Books and App, I’ve always been passionate about connecting fun with literacy and promoting diversity and inclusion through storytelling. This event gave me the chance to share that passion with a room full of educators and early childhood professionals who are just as committed to creating meaningful, inclusive learning experiences.
During my presentation, I introduced attendees to some of my books, including Our Colorful School and The Bubble Making and Recipe Book, both of which are centered around community, creativity, and cultural celebration. I spoke about how my workshops make reading a joyful, interactive experience for children—while also promoting essential life values like kindness, identity, and acceptance.
One of the most meaningful parts of the session was our flag-making activity. I asked educators to create flags that represented themselves—their heritage, their values, or their teaching teams. This is an activity I regularly do with children, and bringing it to the conference allowed educators to experience the impact of hands-on, identity-affirming learning. It was beautiful to see everyone sharing their backgrounds, stories, and pride in where they come from.
This activity wasn’t just about arts and crafts—it was about celebrating culture, honoring our stories, and showing how diversity can be intentionally woven into classroom spaces in creative and impactful ways.
The feedback I received was incredibly heartwarming. Educators shared how inspired they felt to bring this type of inclusive activity into their own classrooms, and that means everything to me. My goal is to continue building books and experiences that help children feel seen, heard, and loved—because every child deserves that.
I’m so thankful to SCOE for including me in this powerful event and for supporting authors and educators who are committed to diversity in education.
